Charleston County Mental Health Court

 

The Charleston County Mental Health Court is a grant-funded diversion program designed for mentally ill defendants arrested for misdemeanor and non-violent felony offenses on a revolving door basis.


WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
  • Has an identifiable mental illness such as bipolar affective disorder, schizophrenia, etc.
  • Able to understand the terms/conditions of the program
  • Has committed a misdemeanor or non-violent felony offense
  • Resides in Charleston County
  • Has no pending cases that would prevent them from completing the program

EXCLUSIONS

The Supreme Court Order issued December 8, 2002, specifically states that no defendants charged with criminal domestic violence will be allowed in the program, nor will the charge be pled down. No defendants charged with a lewd act on a minor will be allowed entry. All victims shall be advised regarding a defendant’s entry into or discharge from the program. The victim’s position regarding entry into the program shall be considered, however they shall not have veto power.


LOCATIONS:

  • Individual and group treatment sessions are held at the Mental Health Center, located at 2100 Charlie Hall Boulevard Charleston. Home visits are also a part of the program.
     
  • Court is held on Thursdays at 10 a.m. on the fourth floor of the Charleston County Judicial Center, 100 Broad Street, Suite 469, in downtown Charleston.
